Mr. Vasega was inspired to create the Tuvalu flag after he took part in the independence celebrations in 1978. At the time there was no official flag for Tuvalu, so he decided to design one himself.
Mr. Vasega started with a simple and basic design featuring the Union Jack in the upper left hand corner. He then added the stars of the Southern Cross constellation to signify Tuvalu's geographical location in the South Pacific Ocean. He then added the nine stars of the Tuvalu constellation which symbolise the nine islands of the nation. And finally, he added the yellow colour to represent the sun and the wealth and prosperity of the nation.
The final version of the flag was officially adopted by the Tuvaluan government in October 1978. Since then, the flag has become a symbol of Tuvalu's independence and national pride.
