Who Created the Bruneian Flag?
The flag of Brunei was designed by Haji Mohamed Hashim bin Haji Muhammad Jaafar, a Bruneian tailor, in 1959. This flag was chosen from a competition organized by the Brunei State Council. The flag was officially adopted by the Council on 28 September 1959.
The flag is composed of two colors, yellow and white, and has a black and white crescent moon and fourteen-pointed star on it. The yellow color symbolizes the sultanate's sovereignty. The black and white crescent moon represents Islam, Brunei’s official religion. The fourteen-pointed star is an allusion to the Brunei national motto, "Always in service with God's guidance".
The flag has also been used as an emblem for the state and is often seen in official documents, on government buildings, and in public places. It is a symbol of national pride and is often seen at local football matches, during national celebrations, and other gatherings.
Haji Mohamed Hashim bin Haji Muhammad Jaafar was born in 1932 in Kampong Labu, Brunei. He attended the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien College, and learnt tailoring from his father. He started his own tailoring business in 1954.
In 1959, he took part in the competition organized by the Brunei State Council to design the national flag of Brunei. His design was chosen from among twenty-five entries and was approved by the Council on 28 September 1959.
The design was based on the Brunei coat of arms, which had been in use since 1906. The yellow background symbolized the sultanate’s sovereignty, while the black and white crescent moon and fourteen-pointed star represented Islam and Brunei’s national motto.
Haji Mohamed Hashim’s design was later adopted by the Brunei Government in 1964. Since then, the Brunei flag has become a symbol of national pride, and is often seen in public places, including at football matches and other national celebrations.
Haji Mohamed Hashim passed away in 2006, but his legacy lives on in the form of the Brunei flag. His design has become a symbol of unity and loyalty to the nation and its people.
